The collection of Lady Soames, who passed earlier this year at the age of 91, will be offered for sale at Sotheby’s in London on December 17th. Sotheby’s has titled the sale: Daughter of History: Mary Soames and the Legacy of Churchill. Among the 255 objects available are jewelry, silverware, furniture, books, photographs, and paintings, including one by Churchill’s friend Paul Maze. A delightful painting of Churchill by Edwin Arthur Ward painted around 1900 called Portrait of Sir Winston Churchill as a Young Man, Seated at his Desk is included as is Sir Oswald Birley’s Portrait of Sir Winston Churchill, Half Length, Wearing a Siren Suit. The red despatch box used by Churchill as Colonial Secretary is included in the sale and priced at £5,000-£7,000. The most remarkable objects available at Sotheby’s on December 17th are 15 paintings by Churchill, with his The Goldfish Pool at Chartwell, which he painted in 1932, expected to sell for between £400,000-£600,000.
