A new exhibit, Into The Trenches, which chronicles Winston Churchill’s early military career has opened at Chartwell, Churchill’s country home in Kent. The exhibition includes his childhood toy soldiers, Boer War satchel, the wanted poster issued in December 1899 after he escaped from a Boer POW camp, and the French steel helmet he wore while serving with the British army in the First World War. Also included is the damaged torch Churchill used in the trenches. For the story of the torch see my recent article on Churchill’s First World War service in Military History magazine. The exhibit will run until February 21, 2016. The exhibit website is available here and a news report on the exhibit is available here.
