NPG x81256; Randolph Frederick Edward Spencer Churchill by Bassano

BBC News has a story by the reporter Ros Ball on the February 1936 by-election for the Highland’s constituency of Ross and Cromarty that Randolph Churchill contested much against his father’s wishes. The article is titled “Snowballs, handstands and famous sons – the most farcical by-election ever?” and features an interview with Nicholas Soames, MP, Winston Churchill’s grandson. The calamitous election saw two car crashes, Randolph causing an “uproar everywhere he went,” and the election winner Malcolm MacDonald walking the length of a room on his hands in celebration. The report is available here.
