The Daily Telegraph recently reported its discovery that the late Sir Anthony Montague-Browne, Winston’s Churchill last private secretary, was the father of the current Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Reverend Justin Welby. Montague Browne, who died in 2013, served as Churchill’s private secretary during his second premiership and remained with him in his retirement. He was the only non-member of the Churchill family who walked behind the coffin at Churchill’s funeral. Montague Browne later wrote a memoir of his years with Churchill, titled Long Sunset: Memoirs of Winston Churchill’s Last Private Secretary. The Daily Telegraph’s reports are available here and here.
