Sir John Leslie died last month at the age of 99 at his home in Ireland. He was a cousin once removed of Winston Churchill as his grandmother was Leonie Jerome, the sister of Lady Randolph Churchill. During the Second World War Leslie was captured while serving with the British army in France in 1940 and was held for five years. While a prisoner of war Leslie smuggled a postcard out to Churchill which pleaded for an exchange of POWs so that the prisoners who were ill in the camp could be freed. The postcard is currently in the collection of the Imperial War Museum, London. Reports on Sir John Leslie are available from the Irish Times and Belfast Telegraph.
