In the September 2016 issue of History Today, Kevin Ruane (Canterbury Christ Church University and author of the recently published Churchill and the Bomb in War and Cold War) contributes the short article “Churchill, God and the Bomb.” Although Churchill maintained in public that the use of the atomic bomb was legitimate, in private he was conflicted. Despite having been at best “conventionally devout,” he “spent a good deal of time pondering how his responsibility for the atomic bombing would be weighed on the scales if he was wrong.” Ruane concludes that, “if anything could bring Churchill to his knees, it was the bomb.” The History Today website is here.
