Sir Humphrey Walwyn, the Governor of Newfoundland from 1936 to 1946, met with Winston Churchill aboard the HMS Prince of Wales during the prime minister’s visit to the waters off the island in August 1941 for his summit with President Franklin Roosevelt. Walwyn prepared a detailed account of his meeting with Churchill as part of his quarterly dispatch dated October 4, 1941 prepared for Lord Cranborne, the Dominions Secretary. The report is held at The Rooms Provincial Archives in St. John’s.
The full-text of the sections of the quarterly dispatch pertaining to the visit with Churchill are included in the article “Governor Sir Humphrey Walwyn’s Account of His Meeting with Churchill and Roosevelt, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, August 1941” by Melvin Baker and Peter Neary and published in Newfoundland and Labrador Studies (Spring 2016, 31:1).
