“’A Friendly Neutral’: Churchill and Turkey in the Second World War” by Warren Dockter (Aberystwyth University) has been published in Journal of Balkan and Near Eastern Studies (23:6, 2021). During the Second World War Prime Minister Winston Churchill placed great importance on the role of Turkey. He “respected the Turkish decision to pursue what had been characterized as ‘active neutrality’ but he naturally pursued an alliance in which Turkey would move towards belligerency against Axis forces.” In his article Dockter “examines Churchill’s importance in determining the direction of Anglo-Turkish relations during the Second World War and illuminates how he shaped British policy and how his policy was itself shaped by his world view.” The article argues that “Churchill’s traditional nineteenth-century mind set helped form his pursuit of an Anglo-Turkish alliance.” The journal website is here.
