“The Prime Minister and the President” by Joel Nelson and published in the November 2022 issue of History Today describes the attempts by President John F. Kennedy to arrange a meeting with Winston Churchill in 1961. Kennedy held great admiration for Churchill and on the former prime minister’s final visit to the United States in April of that year offered an invitation to the White House and two months later on his own visit to London requested a meeting with Churchill. Both invitations were declined as Churchill was by then 86 years old, in poor health, and unable to attend a meeting with the president. Two years later Kennedy did preside over a White House ceremony granting Churchill honorary American citizenship. Churchill was again unable to attend but was represented by his son Randolph.
